You will learn that I do not necessarily choose to explore the most frequented sites while on my travels. I don't often do my research. This can often frustrate my travel companions, yet we always seem to have a story to tell. This is real travel in my mind.
It was dark and cloudy in Split that day; a sure indication that the rain was inevitable. A perfect exploration day in my opinion so I ventured out alone. As it began to pour, I stumbled (I use the term loosely, it was quite an obvious stop) upon Diocletian's Palace. For only a few KN (Croatian Kuna) I was able to explore the inside galleries and for a few more, walk the stone stairs up the bell tower, aside the main Cathedral.
With the rain absolutely pouring down, not a soul was ahead of me and I got to experience it all alone. This was both thrilling and terrifying. Unlike historical sites in Canada/States, everything was not roped off. There were no bars or fences. One slip off the slippery stairs and I could have gone tumbling down the stairs or over the edge. Would everyone I love know it was an accident?
Once atop the bell tower, I could see everything. The town, the port, the Adriatic... gorgeous. Reflecting on everything around me, with the only sound being the sharp sound of rain hitting the town, the gigantic bells started to toll in my ears at an ideal moment.
These umbrellas were my favorite photo but there are plenty to the album that in time I may share with you. Hope you enjoy the start to many an entry.
